Manglish
English is a sometimes common language here in Malaysia. I say sometimes because although many Malaysians understand a substantial amount of the language, it has mutated as well. Some have called it 'Manglish'. That is a generalization in the sense of terms I might add because there are various categories of this so called 'Manglish'. It is safe to say that we have borrowed the English language and made it our own. As in what the American Idol judges always applaud those contestants that make the song their own, we Malaysian have done so with language, making English our own, although I'm not sure anyone would rave about it. Anyways here is one version of the 'Manglish' I was talking about.

The Prodigal Son- Explained by Kenneth E. Bailey
Some important cultural context in which we should consider when we interpret this parable. Good stuff.

Michael Wittmer on Contemporary Theology
Michael Wittmer is another important voice in theology and he predicts that the pendulum shift in the direction of theology is on the awfulness of the fall after stating that before that, the challenge was on addressing and affirming the goodness of creation. I have not read his books yet but I have a hunch his latest book "Don't Stop Believing: Why Living like Jesus is not Enough" address the issue of 'awefulness of the fall' and his other book "Heaven is a Place on Earth: Why Everything you do Matters to God" addresses the goodness of creation. And I have to thank Mason for directing me to this theologian!

Explaining Emergent Churches - Inner Compass (Peter Rollins)
Peter Rollins is a guy that I would call as someone who thinks outside of the box. He never seems to be out of analogies, parables and explanations that keeps you gawking while you pick up your thoughts. Be forewarned though, his explanations would be deemed unorthodox (even heresy) by some. Others (like me), take them as brilliant. Nevertheless, lets not put labels on before we open our ears to listen, widen the horizons of our beliefs and discernment and undertake the task of critique only after all that. Enjoy...

A Conversation with Eugene Peterson 2007
If you haven't come across this video, do take time to watch it. Some highlights of the video that might stir you curiosity...
-'Who is Bono?'
-Eugene Peterson explains how Isaiah made him turn down Bono's invitation to hang out.
-Some explanation of his translation of the bible: The Message
-Peterson said he wanted to use the word 'lucky' in the beatitudes and explains why
-One of the pastor's job is to "keep the perceptions clean of God"
-Peterson would rather have his books over in the cook book's section.
-writers and poets should be ordained by the church just as pastors and scholars ...
Care to share any thoughts?

Orthodox Heretic
Modern day parables told by Pete Rollins author of "How (not) to Speak of God" and "Fidelity of Betrayal". He has a knack for putting up intriguing titles for books. In his upcoming book, "Orthodox Heretic" he has written a book comprised of modern day parables which were developed to communicate the ideas from his two previous ones. Here are some video segments of Pete reading some excerpts for us. Take a look and listen, you might learn something. And if possible, join me in waiting for the release of the book which is scheduled in April 2009. This would make a wonderful addition to you book shelf and your mind and thoughts.

- I'm a student of Theology (currently and will always be one). I'm a student of culture and a student of music as well. I guess you could say life is a never ending journey of learning. Because of that we never stop being students. Just a little something about this blog: Deconstructing The Monkey is all about being a safe space for emerging conversations
